Letter-Book (The Light and The Dark, Quercus, 2014 ) is a novel about war and peace, love and pain, everyday life, happiness and despair. It records the correspondence between two lovers, torn apart by time and space. They talk about love, growing up, their parents, their childish fears and their hopes for the future.

The young man, Vladimir, is called up as part of an international military force marching into China to suppress the Boxer Rebellion. He writes from the front about the horrors of the military campaign, about the suffering of the wounded and about suppressed feelings. The woman, Sasha, finishes medical school and works as a gynaecologist. Vladimir is dying but the correspondence continues even after he is dead. Sasha writes about her everyday life, her thoughts, the people she has met and life’s general joys and sorrows.

It is not exactly clear when these letters were written. But time is of no importance to the novel. What is important, however, is how people face life’s challenges which is only possible to overcome with the warmth and support of a soulmate.
