Andrey Usachev was born in 1958 in Moscow. He attended the Moscow Institute of Electronics but left to study humanities at Tver State University. His first published work appeared in 1985, and from 1988 he has been a full-time author, mainly of work for children.

Usachev has been extremely prolific, having had 150 books published in Russia. He has had a hand in writing over 10 plays which have been staged in 30 Russian theatres as well in Ukraine and Belarus. As a scriptwriter he wrote 40 episodes of TV series Little Dragon And Company, and 100 episodes of The Merry Quampany Quariety which included 50 songs. For several years Usachev hosted the children’s radio shows The Merry Radio Quampany and The Flying Sofa. 15 of his scripts and poems have formed the plots for animated films, and five of Usachev’s books are recommended by Russia’s Ministry of Education to be studied as school textbooks.

Andrei Usachev is a member of the Writers’ Union of Russia and the Russian PEN Centre. His works have been translated into many languages including Serbian, German and Polish.
